Bordering Kruger National Park

SPACIOUS SECLUSION NEAR KRUGER NATIONAL PARK

What makes Ximuwu so special is our location. The Klaserie Private Reserve borders the world-famous Kruger National Park – THE safari location. In 1992 the fences separating the Klaserie Private Reserve from Kruger National Park were removed to re-establish natural migration.

Today, animals roam freely across the region, and conservation is thriving.

Ximuwu is only 20 minutes from the Hoedispruit (Eastgate) Airport or 35 minutes from the township of Hoedispruit. Our friendly staff will greet you upon arrival and transport you back to Ximuwu lodge.

If you’d prefer to drive from Johannesburg, Ximuwu is approximately 5.5 hours from O.R. Tambo International Airport. Please contact us for directions.

Guests with their own private air travel are welcome to fly directly to Ximuwu Airstrip.

rich history

Sprawling Wilderness

The Klaserie Private Nature Reserve was the innovative idea of three farmers who wanted to merge individually owned farmland along the Klaserie River to create a protected nature reserve that would conserve the natural habitat of the region’s wildlife. The Klaserie was established in 1969 and officially proclaimed a nature reserve in 1972. With no fences between the Klaserie and Kruger National Park, wildlife now have free and protected movement across an area that spans over two million hectares!

Spectacular Game Viewing

The reserve is home to Africa’s Big 5, as well as the endangered African wild dog, cheetahs, spotted hyenas, and numerous antelope and bird species.

Home to over 145 mammals, 500 species of birds, 118 species of reptiles, 30 amphibious species, 335 tree species, and over 50 species of fish, the Klaserie is a nature lover’s paradise.

Playing Our Part

The private reserves that border Kruger National Park are the birthplace of sustainable eco-tourism in South Africa. The area boasts some of the most biodiverse flora and fauna in Africa, and conservation efforts mean that large populations of animals can be seen year-round.

As part of Klaserie Private Nature Reserve, we at Ximuwu are deeply committed to conservation efforts. We aim to keep the reserve in as near a pristine condition as possible. We are centering our efforts on minimising the human footprint.

One of our proudest achievements is the development of our Ximuwu Aquaponics System.

sustainable fresh produce

Aquaponic System

One of our most significant challenges at Ximuwu was finding a sustainable way to provide guests with the freshest and healthiest produce. Using modern technology, we have built a food production system that harnesses the natural symbiotic relationship between plants and animals.

A large tank holds tilapia, a tasty freshwater fish whose natural byproducts fertilise the water. The water is then pumped throughout our greenhouse, feeding our plants all the water and nutrients they need.

The result is a spectacular array of delicious fresh produce, including fish, grown right on the grounds of Ximuwu. Our aquaponics system feeds not only our guests but the entire community that lives at Ximuwu.

Water

Reverse Osmosis Water Plant

What’s more important than fresh, tasty food? Fresh, tasty water! In our planning stage, we learned that one of the biggest waste culprits of safari lodges is water, but not in the way you would think. Because of the poor water quality in most wilderness areas, most lodges will ship in their drinking water in plastic or glass bottles. This results in incredible waste, not just of plastic and glass but also of fuel and resources. Our plan? Be better! We have installed a state-of-the-art reverse osmosis water treatment plant. This means our water quality is exceptional and better than any bottled water we have tested. The best part is that it all happens right here at Ximuwu — no packaging, no transport, and no waste!
