Am I Too Old to Go on a Safari?

South Africa is perfect for senior travelers seeking amazing safaris. Its excellent tourism infrastructure makes exploring easy. Daily commercial flights connect all major cities. Chartered airplanes offer easy access to Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport. There are three daily flights between Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Hoedspruit by Airlink and CemAir. Upon arrival, our staff will collect you from Eastgate Airport. In just 15 minutes, you arrive at Ximuwu Lodge—no long hours in a Gameviewer after your trip.

Peace of Mind

Our lodge is centrally located just 25 minutes from the nearest town. Here, you’ll find doctors and a state-of-the-art hospital opening in September. We are also connected to Africa SafeT, an on-site medical support team available 24/7.

The Lodge and Suites

Ximuwu is wheelchair accessible. We have enhanced security and comfortable features such as grab bars in two bathroom showers and toilets. For extra peace of mind, we offer a security button that alerts our management when needed. Our swimming pool can be heated for winter swims.

Explore Kruger National Park

Kruger National Park is South Africa’s most renowned safari destination. It boasts a diverse range of wildlife, including the iconic Big 5. For seniors, the private game reserves within Kruger offer superior comfort and world-class service. Luxurious accommodations at Ximuwu Safari Lodge cater specifically to seniors. Our lodge is modern and upscale, and the first in the region to be fully wheelchair accessible. Our game viewers have ramps, so no climbing is needed.

What Else to Do in South Africa?

A visit to Cape Town is a must during an African safari. Known as South Africa’s Mother City, Cape Town offers mountains, beaches, historical landmarks, and the picturesque Cape Winelands. Cape Town is easily accessible from Kruger. Spend a few days in each area for a blend of culture, city life, and culinary experiences. Start with Cape Town and the Winelands, then end with the safari for a tranquil finish.

Managing Temperatures

In summer, temperatures can reach up to 40 degrees. Game drives are usually in the early morning and late afternoon when it’s cooler. Ximuwu offers cooling vests for game drives or bush walks. All our facilities are air-conditioned. In winter, we offer blankets, warm water bottles, and seat heating. Our suites and common areas are warmed by fireplaces on cold days, ensuring a cozy environment.

Bush Events

In winter, our bush events, like bush dinners and bush breakfasts, feature cozy campfires. We provide blankets for chilly guests. These events combine culinary offerings with the true beauty of the African bushveld.

Exclusive Bookings at Ximuwu Safari Lodge

At Ximuwu Safari Lodge, we offer exclusive bookings for as few as four guests. This allows you to decide on game drive timings each day, providing a personalized safari experience.

  • Happy Friday from Ximuwu!
  • When the lodge goes quiet at night, the waterhole doesn’t!

We set up a camera in the hide and left it running, just to see who would come by for a drink after dark. And as always, the waterhole did what it does best — steady movement, quiet arrivals, and a constant sense that there is always something just beyond the light.
It’s simple, natural, and always different from one night to the next.

Still… it does make you wonder
who would swap their beautiful suite for a night in the hide? 😇

  • A slow drive, a bit of scanning… and then suddenly all eyes in one direction.

A leopard stretched out in a tree, completely relaxed, while we watch from the vehicle below. It’s one of those sightings that instantly changes the energy on the vehicle.

For many guests, this is right at the top of the wishlist. And when it happens, it never disappoints.
One of many beautiful sightings we were fortunate to enjoy at Ximuwu last week 🐆
  • Wildebeest cross Ximuwu airstrip in the soft light of the setting sun. The plains are bathed in a warm glow, and there’s a peaceful calm that settles over the bush as day slowly turns to night ✨
  • Yesterday on our viewing deck, we witnessed a truly unforgettable moment. Ger asked Debby to marry him—and she said yes! 💍

Their journey together has been a long one, filled with love, challenges, and triumphs. A few years ago, Debby suffered a stroke that changed their lives, and they faced some very difficult times. But through it all, their love and determination never wavered. Today, Debby is thriving and they’re back to chasing adventures together.

A safari had long been on their wish list, but as a wheelchair user, Debby thought it might never happen. Then they found Ximuwu. In that perfect moment, with the African wilderness all around them, Ger proposed to his wonderful Debby—and we were honored to witness it.
Here’s to love, resilience, and dreams coming true. 💛
  • Seeing Ximuwu from the ground is one thing… but from the sky, it’s something else entirely.
Every flight ends with a final turn over the lodge, giving you that last sweeping view of the bush, the open plains, and our little piece of wilderness from above. It’s the kind of perspective that really stays with you.

And the best part? This helicopter flight is included in every stay at Ximuwu.
A different angle, a different feeling — and one more reason to fall in love with this place.
