Planning Your Stay

How far in advance should I book?

If you’re coming from overseas, we recommend booking 6-12 months ahead, particularly if you have specific dates in mind. That said, we absolutely welcome last-minute bookings. If you’re flexible, we can often work magic with short notice — just reach out and we’ll see what’s possible. You can view our availability here.

What’s included in the rate?

Your stay includes everything you need for an exceptional safari experience:

Two game drives per day customizable to your preferences — swap either for a walking safari, photo hide experience, or another activity
Three meals daily, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner, tailored to your dietary needs
All beverages, including local wine selections, spirits, beer, soft drinks, coffee, and tea
Use of all lodge facilities, including the spa, firepit, lounges, swimming pool, if you book a suite in the Ximuwu Lodge
Expert guide and tracker, assigned to your vehicle throughout your stay

What’s the best time to visit Ximuwu?

There’s no “best” time — only the time that matches what you want to experience. Every season offers something different:

November (spring/early summer) is baby season — you’ll see young animals, vibrant bird life, and the beginning of the rain season. Temperatures are warm, and the landscape is transitioning toward lush.
January (mid-summer) is the beginning of the flooding season, which brings a dramatically green landscape. The bush is at its most verdant, and water is abundant — perfect for photographers seeking dramatic scenery.
July (winter) is dry season, which means animals often congregate at watering holes. The temperatures are relatively cool and comfortable. Wildlife viewing is exceptional, and the skies are clear for stargazing.
September-October (spring) is an outstanding season for bird watching. The weather is warming, and animals are active as they prepare for the rains.

How do I get to Ximuwu from Johannesburg or Cape Town?

Fly and/or drive.

If you’re flying, you’ll land at Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport (HDS), approximately 1 hour from Johannesburg or 2.5 hours from Cape Town. From the airport, it’s a scenic  30 minute drive to Ximuwu. We can arrange transfers.

If you don’t mind a scenic but long drive, you might opt to drive from elsewhere in South Africa.  Ximuwu is approximately 5.5 hours from Johannesburg, not counting stops.

For groups or those seeking maximum convenience, private charter flights directly to the airstrip can be arranged.

Safaris and Wildlife

What wildlife will I see at Ximuwu?

Ximuwu sits within the Greater Kruger ecosystem, where animals move freely. We can’t guarantee specific sightings on any given drive — that’s part of the magic of exploring the bush.

Frequent visitors include the Big Five (lions, rhinos, buffalo, elephants, and leopards), wild dogs, cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, and antelope. Ximuwu is a wonderful spot for birders, with over 400 species recorded in the Klaserie Nature Reserve. Many vultures nest in our nearby trees and we often spot a breeding pair of Verreaux Eagle-owls.

If you have a “wish list” of animals, share them with our skilled trackers. They will do their best to make sure you see them.

Can I choose my safari type?

Absolutely. We pride ourselves on customization. Your guides work with you to design your safari experience:

– Game drives
– Walking safaris
– Night drives
– Sound safaris
– Photo safaris and hides
– Bird-watching safaris

We can mix and match, swap them day-to-day, or focus on one experience throughout your stay. Your guide will help you choose based on the day’s conditions and your interests.

Are the safaris suitable for my fitness level?

Our game drives and night drives are accessible for most fitness levels. You stay in the vehicle, so physical fitness isn’t a limiting factor. Our vehicles are designed for easier access for those with mobility concerns.

However, our walking safaris are more demanding. Expect a 2-hour walk through natural terrain with no benches or planned rest stops. In rare circumstances (tracking predators), you may need to move quickly or navigate uneven ground.

Can I bring my own mobility equipment?

Yes, absolutely. Bring whatever makes your stay more comfortable and independent — wheelchairs, walkers, mobility aids, braces, anything you need. At the lodge, we have accessible pathways, automatic doors, and bath lifts to make your stay comfortable.

If you’re flying, check with your airline about what’s allowed and any requirements for transporting equipment. We have certain mobility equipment, please contact us to discuss your personally requirements.

What should I wear and bring on a safari?

Choose comfortable, breathable clothes suitable for the season. We recommend bringing a warm jacket or windbreaker, as mornings are cool even in summer. In winter, the mornings and evenings can get cold, so we recommend a warm hat and scarf. We recommend wearing shoes at all times as the area has scorpions and snakes. Comfortable, supportive shoes are a good idea, as are hiking boots if you want to join a walking safari. Always bring sunscreen and a hat for sun protection.

Can children join safaris?

Yes. Ximuwu accommodates children over 12 years old. Children under the age of 12 are welcome by special arrangement, please contact us to discuss.

Do you offer guided walking safaris?

Yes. Walking safaris are offered for guests with reasonable fitness and mobility. Before heading out, you will need to sign an indemnity form.

Walking safaris typically last 2 hours, cover natural terrain, and are led by an expert guide. They are not suitable for people with significant mobility limitations, severe fitness constraints, or those uncomfortable with unpredictable conditions.

Are the walking safaris accessible for people with mobility challenges?

Walking safaris are not suitable for people with significant mobility limitations. These walks last approximately 2 hours on natural terrain with no rests or benches — they’re genuinely demanding.

We do offer accessible alternatives, though. Our game drives (including night-drives and bird-watching drives) are fully accessible, as are our photo hides, which are perfect for stationary wildlife observation.
