Ximuwu Safari Lodge: One of the Best Holiday Destinations for Wheelchair Users

Are you looking for one of the best holiday destinations for wheelchair users? Then Ximuwu Safari Lodge is the place for you. Located in the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve, near Kruger National Park, Ximuwu combines luxury with full accessibility. Here, everyone can enjoy the thrill of the African bush without any barriers.

Accessibility Without Compromise

This concept was born from personal experience. After spending three months in a wheelchair, our founders realized the need for a lodge that blends accessibility and luxury. So, they created Ximuwu—a place where elegance meets full accessibility. This vision makes Ximuwu one of the best holiday spots for wheelchair users.

We designed all paths to be paved and wheelchair-friendly. Additionally, everything is on one level, so there’s no need for elevators. Ramps provide access to key areas like the boma and our accessible photographic hide. Moreover, our game viewer features special sliding seats and doors, allowing guests to easily transfer from their wheelchair. Once seated, guests are securely strapped in, ready for a safe and thrilling game drive.

Accessible and Luxurious Accommodations

Our rooms are built for comfort and accessibility. Each room has wide sliding doors over 100 cm, allowing easy wheelchair access. Two of the rooms feature paraplegic toilets and showers with grab bars. For those who prefer, another room is grab-bar-free but includes a removable rack for extra support. We also designed open countertops and easy-to-use taps, ensuring every space is wheelchair-friendly.

In addition, the main lodge includes an accessible toilet with an electric door opener and handrails. The spacious dining area also accommodates wheelchairs so that guests can dine comfortably. Every detail at Ximuwu is thoughtfully designed to ensure a relaxing stay.

Special Amenities and Services

To further enhance your experience, Ximuwu offers tailored amenities for wheelchair users. For safety, we provide emergency buttons that connect throughout the lodge via Wi-Fi. We also offer specialized equipment, including shower chairs, transfer board, a shower wheelchair, a bath lift, adjustable beds, an electric wheelchair, a manual wheelchair, cooling vests, seat heating equipment, and an accessible airport shuttle van—all available free of charge.

For those who love swimming, we imported a state-of-the-art pool lift from Europe. This ensures that everyone can enjoy a refreshing dip. Plus, we can heat the pool upon request, adding extra comfort to your stay.

Convenient Location

Ximuwu is just 10 minutes from Eastgate Airport and 30 minutes from Hoedspruit, making travel quick and easy. Our accessible airport shuttle van ensures smooth transfers, so you can start your adventure right away.

  • Seeing Ximuwu from the ground is one thing… but from the sky, it’s something else entirely.
Every flight ends with a final turn over the lodge, giving you that last sweeping view of the bush, the open plains, and our little piece of wilderness from above. It’s the kind of perspective that really stays with you.

And the best part? This helicopter flight is included in every stay at Ximuwu.
A different angle, a different feeling — and one more reason to fall in love with this place.

  • Not your average bathroom view… 🛁

From the bathtub, the plains stretch out in front of you, open and uninterrupted. Wildlife passing by, birds calling in the distance, and nothing else to think about for a while.
A quiet moment between game drives, with one of the best seats in the lodge.
  • There’s something quite special happening out at our Steendam hide.
A hyena clan has made this area their home, with a den tucked safely nearby. It’s a place full of life, where you never quite know what you’ll witness next.

Many guests already know and love the hide right in front of the lodge, but having a second hide at Steendam adds a whole new experience. A little more remote, a little more raw… and often incredibly rewarding.

Picture an afternoon settled in, your favourite drink within reach, camera ready. No rush, no noise, just the quiet rhythm of the bush. Hyenas moving in and out, other wildlife arriving at the waterhole, each moment unfolding in its own time.
  • The Sark pride decided to take a stroll right past our game viewer today… and Thulani, as usual, had the best seat in the house!

Guests often ask how close we get to the animals… well, is this close enough? 🤩
Just look at those full bellies on the youngsters! It’s wonderful to see them thriving and doing so well.
  • There’s never a dull moment on our airstrip… especially when the local “management” is on duty.

For years, this loyal pair of black-backed jackals has claimed the strip as their territory. Around here, we call them Jackie… or, when they’re feeling particularly bold, the airstrip mafia. Always alert, always watching, and very quick to investigate any hint of action nearby.

This morning’s sighting shows one of them dashing purposefully down the runway — no doubt on the way to “assist” where a predator might have made a kill. Nothing ever goes unnoticed with these two around.

Small, clever, and full of character — they’ve become part of daily life at Ximuwu, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
  • A beautiful breeding herd of buffalo gathered at Anderson Dam this morning. Wonderful to see so many youngsters among them. These big herds are always impressive to watch as they move through the reserve. A great sighting on an early game drive at Ximuwu. 🐃🌿
